Fullerton Union High School Army JROTC

Today's Junior Reserve Officer Training Program is a four year elective course available to all male and female high school students. The mission of the JROTC Program is to develop the nation’s future leaders and to encourage students to be better American citizens. The program has no interest in recruiting personnel for the Armed Forces. Our approach is to instill learning while having fun. In the JROTC Corps of Cadets, students fill positions of leadership based on their demonstrated character, competence, and commitment to excellence.

To accomplish our mission, we begin by teaching and enforcing those disciplines which allow students to derive maximum benefit from the other academic and social components of their high school experience. These disciplines begin with respect for parents and those adults who are legally charged with responsibility for teaching students and insuring their safety while in school.

The JROTC curriculum includes blocks of instruction on leadership, physical training, military history, and the core Army values. Additionally, JROTC cadets will receive instruction on the use of communications, first aid, hygiene, CPR, drug abuse prevention, citizenship, contemporary issues, career opportunities and military drill. Team building, problem solving, confidence and self esteem are emphasized during exciting, physical activities such as rappelling, mountain climbing, rope bridge building, obstacle courses and leadership development courses.

The JROTC program is partially funded by the U.S. Army as a community service. Consequently, text books, uniforms and military equipment are furnished at no cost to students. Students are required to wear military uniforms one day each week and when engaged in military functions such as color guards, drill teams, parades, award/promotion ceremonies and formal dances.

In addition to academic grades and elective credits toward graduation, the JROTC program uses added incentives such as award of medals and ribbons for special achievement; promotion in rank; assignment to positions of responsibility; competitive selection for field trips and summer camps. The JROTC department also makes recommendations for scholarships to attend senior ROTC programs at the college level and national military academics.

JROTC summer camps provide a healthy outdoor arena for positive behavior and accomplishment 24 hours each day. The academic component of these camps offers an additional opportunity for students to make up lost credits and get back on track with their graduating class. This is an important factor in avoiding high school drop-out. National statistics indicate that JROTC students are 10-15% more likely to graduate from high school than their peers in the same school.

Successful participation in the JROTC program can result in advance rank in the armed forces for those students who select that career path; advance placement in senior ROTC programs for those who earn a scholarship to attend college and become military officers and improve chances for outstanding students to secure appointments to one of the national military academies.

Recent successes of JROTC programs have prompted Congress to expand them from 1250 to 1700 high schools nationwide.
